U.S. Bicycle Route System

26 November 2008, 08.00 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1,586 comments »

A client of mine, Adventure Cycling, just picked up a nice piece of press in the New York Times about their amazing work on the US Bicycle Route System. The United States is on a path to creating what could become the largest official bicycle route network in the world.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Like many, he is one of my favorites. Not very original there but I don’t care. This shot was taken in Hamburg around 1953. Amazing this fellow can be so dapper riding a bike in such shitty conditions with one leg. Inspiring for sure.

Stockman’s has been in the same family since 1956. One of my favorite watering holes.

Shitdaiwa

Some of my fondest memories as a youngster were spent paling around with my dad on the weekends running errands and doing chores. Our favorite event was the chainsaw. We had a shindaiwa. I think it was a piece of shit that someone hustled on us and we suffered because of it. The thing never started easily.

I remember once my dad convinced me to put my foot on the bottom guard while he tried to start it. On the third pull he put his elbow in my mouth and knocked me on my ass. Split my bottom lip and mom was pissed. He yelled at me to stop spitting blood.

Now I rock a hand-me-down Poulan. I get busy with it but it’s kind of falling apart. At least it’s made by Husqvarna. My next one will be orange.

I used to always watch these Woodsmen events. Maybe i’ll bore out the Poulan and step it up.

5EP

Just got a really nice package from the good folks at 5EP. I’ve got jeans on the daily and 5EP is my favorite and they’ve got me covered. I like my jeans rigid and raw so I can break them in myself. Nothing special, just daily wear and no washing until my girl makes me. These Straight Down dungarees are hand cut from 13.5 oz Japanese selvage. Basic perfection made in Japan.

When I’m not rocking jeans, I’m in chinos and 5EPs on that front too. The most comfortable material, thick and soft. Christine is the master of washing and rumor has it that Supreme tried to get her to do their Chinos but no such luck.

Scenes from the Farm

We’re in firewood mode at the moment and trying to stockpile as much wood as possible. We can get away with only wood heat on the farm thanks to our Jøtul.

Pack it in and Buy a Pickup

I was doing some research the other day and stumbled upon this great image of Neil. One of my favorites for sure. Four things to take note of.

1. Stephen Stills bass in the back.
2. The absolutely beautiful Martin D-45 on Neil’s lap. A tour of the Martin  guitar factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania should be added to your list of things to do. It’s a total dream being able to play any Martin you’d like while you’re at the factory.
3. His 875 Red Wings. Judging by the looks of things they’ve see some work.
4. A bottle of Schlitz to quench the man’s thirst. Go grab one and raise it up to Neil.

Fignon Cycles Gitane

Cycles Gitane, as the company is called in France, has one of the richest histories in the world of cycling. They have supported some of the best riders, most notably Bernard Hinault and one of our favorites, Laurent Fignon.

Fignon rose to prominence in the 1983 Tour de France. At the age of 22, he was hired to ride support for Hinault. Hinault injured his knee in his Vuelta a Espana victory and didn’t start the Tour de France that year. Fignon was tapped as team leader since he was riding so strong and went on to win the 1983 Tour de France. The French rider then stuffed a back to back win in 1984 in France and the Milan-San Remo and the Giro d’Italia in 1989.

Most people remember his epic year of 1989. He had just come off 2 major Italian wins and looked to steamroll the Tour. Greg Lemond had just returned to cycling that year after almost being killed in a hunting accident. Fignon lost by a mere 8 seconds to Lemond who came back from a 50 second gap to crush Fignon in the final time trial in what would be his last significant placing in a major event but the closest Tour ever.

We like the way he rolls; leather hair net, attention to details (his glasses), choice in brakes (Deltas) and of course his mad skills on the bike.
