i listen to a lot of music. at least 30-50 albums a week and as you can imagine my ears get tired. there is so much of the same type of music coming out these days and its hard distiguish one from the other… so when something like this comes around it stands out. sexy, challenging and makes you want to move. its been out for a bit but every time i hear it it still feels fresh. i’m not going to write too much about him to entice you to search for more…check it

Broken Bells

Had to share this track. I’ve had the album since Oct. and been dying to share it with people….  It’s Dangermouse, producer of such artists as Gnarls Barkley, The Rapture, The Gorillaz, Beck’s ‘modern guilt’ & The Black Keys to name a few, and The Shins lead singer James Mercer.

As someone that has to keep up on music i’ve found that following great producers is kind of the secret to knowing what the good new albums will be. A&R guys used to be(some still are)  the talent seekers and stars, but i have felt the shift to the producers. As everyone and their mother start an ‘indie’ band with a copy of garage band and couple of distorted vocals and guitars there only a handful of producers making polished, clean, sound expanding music who seek out artist to collaborate with. Its really nothing new  Quincy & Phil Spector did it and now people like James Ford, Rich Costey, Jacquire King , Dave Sardy, Paul Epworth and even pop producers like Max Martin and Dr. Luke do it. Next time you hear a song you like and can’t get out of your head you might just be surprised who produced it.

LSD no no

I wanted to share this video a co-worker of mine sent to me a while back and just rediscovered. The audio was taken from a radio interview with Doc Ellis  in the 1980s then wonderfully animated by No Mas and James Blagden.

Touchdown!

As a budding professional baseball player in a previous career of mine, Dock’s recount of this is pretty amazing. Can’t even imagine playing high on LSD.. i couldn’t even catch fly balls chewing tabacco.

This is the time of the year that all the publications makes their lists for whom they think will be the big breakout artists of next year. If you aren’t in the music bus I think you’ll dig the lists and discover all sorts of music that you can tell all your friends about how you ‘discovered’ them.  I tend to look toward the UK as they seem to a bit more open minded for new and different sounds. A few of my thoughts for coming year are ellie goulding, neon trees, penguin prison, wolf gang, samuel, pnau, delorean, fyfe dangerfield, gold panda and of course the drums .. and here are a couple of other sites:

Little Dragon

Little Dragons newest record Machine Dreams I think is one of the most overlooked records of this year. From the swedish/japanese/american’s cool, penetrating vocals to the groovy, 80’s, catchy rhythms & synth hooks. Its dance music injected with soul. Really doesn’t sound like much else out there right now.
