US vs UK

31 March 2009, 22.19 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

The U.S Esquire always tries hard and proof of this can be seen in this video for their newest cover.

But, in my ever so humble opinion, the UK’s edition of Esquire beats it hands down. the UK edition had the perfect redesign a couple of years ago now and instead of trying gimmickry, it’s simply found a great formula and stuck to it. The writers are great and the fashion section manages to straddle the line between fashion-forward and wearability extremely well.

This is what I’ve been watching over the weekend.

Found this VHS (I’m old school like that) version of Vertigo in the back of my wardrobe. Apart from having amazing coverwork, it’s also a great film – as to be expected from Alfred Hitchcock.

This is what I’ve been reading over the weekend.

I’ve talked about Men’s Non-No before, Man about Town has been covered by Style Salvage and everyone loves Monocle (lots of people love taking our pictures without linking back to us too, but thats another post)  so I’ll keep this post restricting to writing about Private Eye and Readymade: How to build (almost) anything.

Readymade: how to build (almost) anything is a great guide to making use of materials around you. You probably won’t make everything you see in the book – I know I won’t – but it’s a great eye opener to what can be acheived with some creativity.

I’ve talked about magazines around here a lot but I haven’t mentioned Private Eye, by far my favourite magazine out. For those who don’t know, Private Eye is a current affairs magazine that has some of the finest investigative reporting out there. It’s the only magazine I know that guarantees to give me the story behind the story.

Next Post: Style hard (my tribute to the slightly cheesy men.style feature)

Back from the dead

Steve McQueen is one of those men that other men have a crush on. Men’s fashion blogging is overflowing with tributes, essays on his style and photo posts showing his every movement. While everyone looking up to the same person can lead to a samey outlook – ‘Indie’ music suffers from this, everyone loves the same bands and everyone starts to sound the same – his status as a style icon is undeniable.

ASOS know this and decided to write an imaginary Q&A, asking him about his style.

I don’t write for Kempt, but if I did this would definitely be listed under ‘bad idea’.

Sometimes inspiration crosses over into straight copying. Take this Burton shirt for example, which bears more than a passing resemblance to an Alexander McQueen shirt.
