Would have been nice to see you guys fare better in the UEFA CL but nonetheless, Benfica is a great club. Portuguese football is much fun to watch. I have to look into a Tottenham Hotspur espresso cup for myself!

Great post Jeff, and I agree with Jason’s points above. I still love the feature-length journalism in the New Yorker, Wired and Vanity Fair. My real issue lies with the C.V.s emailed to me offering journalistic services on the back of rehashed product blogging. I’d love to see those with the E-enthusiasm really elevate their work and have something to aim for and topple the old guard.

To be honest, I don’t understand why blogger seems to be the hardest word these days. There’s no shame in it, and as time goes on, It’ll be even more dominant. I think a division is a positive thing in many respects.

These are all interesting points and I pretty much agree. But what fashion writing can you genuinely call journalism? To me it’s a near oxymoronic term. If your feature article is basically advertorial (which it is for 99.999% of magazines), then you’re a writer not a journalist. Say what you want about blogs (and I’ve heard just about every one in the book) you’ll never see a 3000 word piece on someone who doesn’t advertise in a magazine (something we’ve done on SL). The trick for bloggers is to avoid the trap magazines are in. We’ve still got leeway, we’ve just got to make better use of it.
