My first Google Wave (what the hell is Google Wave?)
I was lucky enough to be amongst the first people to be invited to join Google Wave. I get addicted to any new communication tool that becomes available on the internet, so you can immagine how crazy I am for a tool that promises to be THE communication and collaboration tool of tomorrow…
After a few days of playing around (It’s has already become the first thing I do when I open my computer) I thought I could share my experience with you. I’ll try to be more concise possible.
What is Google Wave?
I won’t copy paste the official Google’s definition and will try to say it using my words. Wave was introduced before summer as the “future of email“, and it’s concept is pretty simple: Immagine an email message wich does NOT get sent to people, but instead people go in one place and read it. You might be thinking “so why should I go there and read a message when I already have the possibility to have messages sent to me directy in my mailbox?” Because this way there is always one single copy of the message and this means a whole series of new things that can happen.
Lets start with the main “new” feature. What is a Wave?
Think of it as a topic, a discussion, in email language it’s the equivalent of an email. Everytime you want to talk with someone about something new you create a wave. In this wave you then invite someone to participate in the discussion (if it were an email you would send it). You can invite anyone to join a wave.
Google wave is real time.
This means that you can actually see people typing a message just like in a chat. No matter how many. And that removes the need for us to actualy need to use other chat systems.
A Wave is editable by anyone.
This means wiki, collaboration. And it also means that all edits (wich are traceble by using a smart playback feature) are done within the same original message. All edits since your last visit are also automatically highlighted when you open up the wave again. This is one of the great features of gw, because it makes for a great collaboration tool. It’s fun to see how a simple wave can gradually transform into a whole wiki document that can contain text, images, multimedia… anything.
A Wave can contain applications.
Immagine Facebook. You can add applications (wich google calls Gadgets, Extensions or Bots) to perform any kind of task. Polls, maps, feeds… Anyone can write an app for wave, just like with facebook. Bots are also very intresting. They appear as “normal” users but they are actually pieces of software wich you can interact with, ask them anything. Movies, weather, horoscopes ecc. Just invite a bot to your conversation and voilà! As an example, check out Rosie in the video below. Rosie is the official translator bot wich translates whatever you say in realtime!

A wave can be private or public
Public waves are a big feature of gwaves, and I actually didn’t know about this feature until I entered for the first time. In fact, the first time I enterd I was quite dissapointed because I had no friends inside and I didn’t know what to do a part from sending messages to myself… So I started wondering the internet looking for some suggestions on what to do and bumped into Lifehackers 101 and Mashable’s Complete guides to google wave. I learned from them how to create a public wave (the process is currently a bit complicated but it worked). So I created the first public wave for PIG Radio fans. We currently have 5 members including me ;) I’m quite happy about it considering that the vast majority of public waves out there are about how-to-use guides or about iPhone and blackberry phones. But I also saw a “Legalize Cannabis” wave and one for Silvio Berlusconi haters! But things look pretty mono-themed now as there are very few users and the vast majority of them are programmers or their friends. When I go in the public search and stare at waves being updated in realtime I am actually able to see the same ones appear over and over!
A wave can contain links to other waves.
This seems an obvious statement but it’s actually one of the things that excites me most. This feature enables anyone to create a sort of website inside a wave. PIG Radio Wave for example contains links to a couple of waves (wich I called sub-waves). One with the power hits playlist and another one with a poll. The cool thing is that being editable by anyone, a wave can grow with the help and collaboration of anyone. Anyone can enter PIG Waves and insert links, pictures, or even create new waves and link them to the main one.
To sum up
I think gwave could be a valid collaboration/communication and why not journalism tool. The feeling it gives me is that of a hypertextual future like the ones portrayed in many american movies of the early-mid 80’s. No frills, just pure content, delivered in a simple, direct and easy to use manner. After these few days I already think of the email as an old and obsolete system, and wish everyone was already inside it so I could use it for more useful purposes.
