Olympic Peninsula, Washington – Ruby Beach

25 May 2009, 18.45 | Posted in Outdoors, Travel | No comments »

Ruby Beach is known for its driftwood and skipping rocks. Located off highway 101 in the Olympic National Park, it serves as the barrier between the Pacific breakers and the coastal firs. This melange provides a rare landscape of old growth forests and jagged monoliths. It’s also a good place to scavenger for some flotsam that’s floated over from Asia.

I threw my arm out skipping rocks. I threw an 8.

Too bad it’s illegal to take any driftwood from the beach. This was used to build camp and provided protection from Bigfoot.

Warm food is sooo good after a few days in the woods. Grabbed some burgers at Sully’s on the way out. A classic spot, expect greasy but good.

S’mores

12 January 2009, 22.55 | Posted in Food, Outdoors, Travel | 1 comment »

When was the last time you had a s’more? Not a store bought cookie variety but the real-deal thing. According to the back of the graham cracker box, each square should have one marshmallow and one piece of chocolate. I’m sure there are other, more fancy recipes but you can’t go wrong with the original—simple, delicious and ‘tis the season.

First step is to wait for your fire (with a traditional s’more it’s gotta be an open fire) to burn down a bit. A lot of people make the mistake of going in to early. You wanna wait till there are some low flames but mostly burning embers.

When it’s ready, roast your marshmallow according to your preference. I personally like a golden brown color with some touches of black carbon. Make sure to use a straight roasting stick so that getting all sides of the marshmallow isn’t too much of a challenge.

Add one slice of a Hershey’s chocolate bar on top of each marshmallow. I like to squish it down a bit spreading the marshmallow over the whole cracker. It also releases a bit of the heat so you don’t burn your tongue.

Add another graham cracker to finish off the sandwich.

EAT IT ALL.

Olympic Peninsula, Washington – Hoh Rainforest

29 October 2008, 23.03 | Posted in Outdoors, Travel | No comments »

My girlfriend (Bryn Chernoff of Paperfinger) and I just got back from a much needed vacation out on the left coast on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I feel rather relaxed and recharged.

Living in NYC, sometimes you forget how nice trees, water and fresh air are. Granted we were in McCain/Palin territory (we saw a sign that read “Don’t Let Seattle Steal This Election”) but being out in the middle of no where is so rejuvenating. I suggest you try it out. We all work too hard anyway, you deserve it.’

HohRainForest
The Hoh Rainforest is a temperate rainforest. Maples and Douglas Firs are completely covered in moss weighing them down. All the moss needs to survive is the nutrients provided by the air.

Bryn sneaking up on an elk amongst some amazing ferns.

This river weed was so vibrant in color and looked so fresh. It made us thirsty.

This must have been some domino effect.

Old and wise.

We hiked though the forest to the Hoh River, a winding but shallow river that flows down from the surrounding Mountains.

The river’s blue-green color is caused by rock powder and sediment that flows with it.
