Digit by Julien Maire

18 August 2009, 23.11 | Posted in Art, Video | No comments »

For “Digit,” performance artist Julien Maire doesn’t use a writing utensil, typewriter or computer, he simply slides his fingers over paper and text magically appears below them. He can move his hand any way forming text drawings of sorts.

Apparently those that witness this in person are amazed as there is no evidence of visible hardware used. Magic.

Last Suppers / Last Meal

12 August 2009, 19.05 | Posted in Art | No comments »

A photo series by James Reynolds, Last Suppers documents Death Row prisoners’ last meals before execution (above).

The same theme done differently, Jonathon Kamboris created a similar series (below). He comments “…prisoners waiting to die choose their last meal for different reasons. Some choose from past memories while others feast on what they crave at the moment. Such fascinating details surrounding the final hours before being put to death are a matter of public record and are the inspiration of this series of photographs.”

Notice the artists different takes on the same meals.

Both series are gripping.

Soap Handshake

Instead of a soap dispenser or a tray, soap-on-a-rope type contraptions are the norm in public bathrooms in S. Korea. This bar of soap shaped like a hand is an especially clever if not eery take. Wash your hands more.

Daggerin’

12 June 2009, 18.29 | Posted in Dance, Travel, Video | No comments »

The latest dance craze to sweep through the dancehall scene in Jamaica is called Daggerin. Essentially just dry humping your partner, it’s stirred a bit of debate and some think that both songs that mention it and the dance itself should be banned. My opinion is at least you can’t get the bug from this type of fun.

In the video above, Mystique talks a little about her style, her thoughts on Daggerin and get a glimpse of the new dance craze (sfw).

Outbreak 09

I was flying through Shanghai last week and before we could de-plane a group of tyvek-suits shot lasers at my forehead to take my temperature. Futuristic, weird, and it made all of us on the plane feel real comfortable.

Olympic Peninsula, Washington – Ruby Beach

25 May 2009, 18.45 | Posted in Outdoors, Travel | No comments »

Ruby Beach is known for its driftwood and skipping rocks. Located off highway 101 in the Olympic National Park, it serves as the barrier between the Pacific breakers and the coastal firs. This melange provides a rare landscape of old growth forests and jagged monoliths. It’s also a good place to scavenger for some flotsam that’s floated over from Asia.

I threw my arm out skipping rocks. I threw an 8.

Too bad it’s illegal to take any driftwood from the beach. This was used to build camp and provided protection from Bigfoot.

Warm food is sooo good after a few days in the woods. Grabbed some burgers at Sully’s on the way out. A classic spot, expect greasy but good.

One of my favorite speakers at the 99% Conference was Scott Thomas, New Media Director for Obama For America and designer of whitehouse.gov. Have a look at the Cool Hunting Video above for the essence of his talk.
